ABUJA / IBADAN — The Nigeria Police Force has intensified security operations in Oyo State following a deadly attack and abduction incident in Oriire Local Government Area, with the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, ordering the immediate deployment of additional tactical and intelligence assets to the region.
The directive, issued after the incident in the early hours of Friday, May 15, 2026, is aimed at strengthening ongoing rescue efforts and restoring security across affected communities and surrounding forest areas.
High-Level Security Visit and Coordination
The Police Chief personally visited Oyo State to assess the situation and coordinate response efforts. During the visit, he met with senior officers and security stakeholders, including:
Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command
Ojo Adekimi, whose presence underscored the proximity of the affected area to neighboring Kwara State
Abayomi Shogunle, Commissioner of Police, Schools Protection Squad
Security officials provided operational briefings detailing ongoing search-and-rescue missions, intelligence gathering, and deployment strategies across vulnerable communities.
Intensified Rescue and Security Measures
According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Placid, the police have escalated:
Coordinated search-and-rescue operations
Intelligence surveillance in forest corridors
Tactical deployments in high-risk zones
The Inspector-General assured residents, particularly parents and guardians, that efforts are being intensified to secure the safe return of abducted victims and apprehend those responsible.
Condemnation and Assurance
Disu condemned the attack as “cruel and entirely unacceptable,” extending condolences to families of victims who lost their lives. He emphasized that the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, remain committed to restoring peace and ensuring justice.
“The Nigeria Police Force will not relent until all perpetrators are brought to justice and normalcy is restored,” the statement said.
Focus on School and Community Safety
The presence of the Schools Protection Squad highlights growing concerns over the safety of educational institutions and rural communities, particularly in areas vulnerable to armed attacks and abductions.
Authorities reiterated that safeguarding schools and local populations remains a top priority as part of broader national security efforts.
Broader Context
The incident adds to ongoing security challenges in parts of Nigeria, where attacks in rural and forested regions have prompted increased calls for enhanced intelligence coordination and rapid-response capabilities.
The latest deployment signals a continued push by security agencies to stabilize affected areas and rebuild public confidence in safety operations.
