INEC to Mobilise 1.4 Million Corps Members for 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to deploy over 1.4 million members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as ad hoc staff for the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this during a visit to the NYSC headquarters in Abuja, where he emphasized the critical role corps members play in Nigeria’s electoral process.

According to him, the commission will require 707,384 corps members for the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, and the same number for the governorship and state assembly elections on February 6, 2027, bringing the total to 1,414,768 personnel.

Key Details

Corps members will serve as presiding officers and registration area officers

They will be deployed across over 176,000 polling units nationwide

Additional 52,446 corps members will be used for off-cycle elections and by-elections

INEC noted that in the 2023 general election, more than 70 percent of its ad hoc staff were drawn from NYSC and student volunteers, highlighting their central role in election operations.

Role of NYSC in Elections

The commission described corps members as:

Educated and trainable personnel

Neutral actors that boost public confidence

Key operators of election technology such as the BVAS system

INEC also acknowledged their contribution to previous elections, including governorship polls and local council elections, where their digital skills supported smooth accreditation and voting processes.

Safety and Preparedness

INEC stated that it is working with security agencies to:

Ensure the safety of corps members

Improve welfare and insurance packages

Provide proper training ahead of the elections

The commission also noted that upcoming off-cycle elections will serve as a test run for 2027 preparations.

Significance

The planned deployment underscores:

The scale and complexity of Nigeria’s electoral system

The continued reliance on NYSC members for election logistics

The importance of youth participation in sustaining democratic processes in Nigeria

Conclusion

With preparations already underway, INEC’s announcement signals an early start to organizing what is expected to be one of Nigeria’s largest and most logistically demanding elections.
