Police Credit Community Intelligence for Crime Prevention in Jigawa

The Nigeria Police Force in Jigawa State has attributed recent successes in crime prevention and public safety to strengthened community policing and grassroots intelligence gathering.

 Event Details

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Haruna A. Yahaya, made this known while presenting a paper titled “Community Policing and Community-Based Intelligence Gathering Initiatives” to participants of Course 48 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

The presentation took place during the college’s study tour to Jigawa State, led by Brigadier General B.O. Omopariola and coordinated by Navy Captain B.A. Bassey.

According to Yahaya, modern policing depends heavily on collaboration between security agencies and local communities.

He emphasized that:

Intelligence from residents has been critical in preventing and detecting crimes

The Police Command reported progress in tackling several crimes, including:

Armed robbery

Motorcycle snatching

Drug abuse

Rape

Culpable homicide

Mob violence

Farmers-herders conflicts

These achievements were linked to credible information provided by community members.

Strengthening Community Partnerships

The Command has expanded collaboration with:

Traditional rulers

Religious leaders

Youth and women groups

Vigilantes and hunters

Forest guards

Civilian Joint Task Force groups

This network has improved intelligence gathering and proactive security measures across the state.

Yahaya noted that the initiative aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which focuses on:

Intelligence-led policing

Stakeholder engagement

Public participation in security management

Inter-Agency Collaboration

The commissioner also commended the Commandant of the college, Air Vice Marshal Alfred Olugbenga Shogbanmu, for promoting collaboration among security institutions through academic and field-based programmes.

He said the study tour would:
